As the Minister for Indigenous Health, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery, I have responsibility for a number of specific Indigenous health and remote area health matters. Latest news Meeting the needs of older Territorians in Lingiari Growing old in remote and regional Northern Territory became a little easier today with the announcement of an additional 36 home-based aged care places funded through the Federal Government’s latest Aged Care Approvals Round. – 2 July 2009 Christmas Island ecosystem rescue The Australian Government will invest $1.5 million to begin the rescue of Christmas Island’s ecosystem, including a mission to capture the last remaining pipistrelle bats for captive breeding. – 1 July 2009 Further investment in Territory TAFES Students in Alice Springs and Katherine will soon be able to be trained in Community Services, Aged Care, Oral and Health programs specifically designed to serve Indigenous communities, following the announcement of over $4.5 million investment in Charles Darwin University’s Alice Springs and Katherine campuses. – 30 June 2009 $17.5 million for modernising schools in Lingiari Schools from Galiwinku to Alice Springs will soon have new or refurbished science laboratories or language centres thanks to the first stage of the Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools (SLC) element of the Building the Education Revolution (BER). – 30 June 2009 Over a million more for NT community infrastructure The Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Fund, which has already delivered well over $6 million dollars to the Lingiari electorate, has been boosted by over a $1 million, Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP announced today. – 26 June 2009 Schools benefiting from Building the Education Revolution right across the NT Federal Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today confirmed that more than $100 million of school infrastructure projects are underway right across the NT improving our schools, and benefiting our kids, teachers, community and economy. – 25 June 2009 Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands to receive community arts funding The Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor, today announced Australian Government funding for two community art programs for Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. – 24 June 2009 $76,500 to conserve Tennant Creek's historic military hospital The historic Tuxworth Fullwood House in Tennant Creek will receive Australian Government funding of $76,500 for restoration works. – 19 June 2009 $116,500 for Hartley Street School, Alice Springs With an Australian Government contribution of $116,500, important conservation and repair works can now begin on Hartley Street School, the first official school in Alice Springs. – 19 June 2009 Central Australian landmarks handed back to traditional owners An important cultural site for the Arrernte people and a geographical landmark that was a beacon for early explorers is among six parcels of land handed back to traditional owners by the Australian Government today. – 12 June 2009 $3 million to help families and children in Alice Springs Vulnerable families and children at risk in Alice Springs will receive additional support through intensive early intervention programs to improve their health and wellbeing. – 12 June 2009
