THE HON ANTHONY ALBANESE MP

THE HON WARREN SNOWDON MP
Minister for Indigenous Health, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery
Member for Lingiari
2 June 2010
Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today announced the Rudd Labor Government will provide $499,000 to fix three dangerous black spots.
The approved projects in the Federal electorate of Lingiari are:
- Intersection of Larapinta Drive and Lovegrove Drive in Alice Springs: $200,000 to install turning lanes and a median refuge. The Northern Territory Government will also provide $100,000 toward this $300,000 project;
- Intersection of Whitewood Road and Hillier Road in Howard Springs: $159,000 to install lighting and upgrade the intersection; and
- Intersection of Girraween Road and Hillier Road in Girraween: $140,000 to install lighting, relocate a power pole and upgrade line marking.
These projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts and will be delivered in the coming financial year.
Mr Snowdon said that since being elected, the Rudd Government has allocated more than $2.9 million to fix fourteen black spots across the electorate of Lingiari.
“This investment is helping to make our local roads even safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, with seven of these projects already completed,” said Mr Snowdon.
“And the good thing about our Black Spot program is that anyone can suggest an intersection or section of road they believe should be considered for a safety upgrade.

Mr Albanese said an independent evaluation of the Black Spot program found it prevented at least 32 fatalities and more than 1,500 serious injuries in its first three years, underscoring its effectiveness at reducing fatal car accidents.
“That’s why nationally we’ve doubled the program’s funding to half a billion dollars – more than honouring all our election commitments," he said.
