Older Australians in Lingiari are set to benefit from package of measures released by the Prime Minister today to help meet the cost of living.
The Delivering for Seniors package is a key part of the Gillard Labor Government’s economic plan.
- $6,500 improved Work Bonus for age pensioners who choose to do part time work.
- $4,000 worth of training and assessment to support mature age workers.
- A dedicated Age Discrimination Commissioner.
- New peer support for grandparent carers.
- New rules for reverse mortgages to protect seniors.
Labor Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon said the package would support and encourage older Australians in the workforce.
“Older Australians have made our nation strong,” Mr Snowdon said.
“Whether they’re still at work, caring for their grandchildren or just enjoying their retirement, they deserve our support.
“This package will help older Australians to stay in the workforce, tackle age discrimination, support grandparent carer and help meet the cost of living.”
Mr Snowdon said the Delivering for Seniors package builds on what Federal Labor had already done for seniors.
“Federal Labor understands the cost of living pressures on seniors,” Mr Snowdon said.
“That’s why we delivered pension reforms worth an extra $100 a fortnight for single pensioners and an extra $74 for couples combined.
“The Delivering for Seniors package will build on this record through $100 million in new commitments.”
Other reforms to ease the cost of living pressure already delivered by Federal Labor include:
Increasing the Utilities Allowance by $400 to help meet the costs of electricity and other essentials.
Increasing support for self-funded retirees including a Senior Supplement now worth $795 a year.
Delivering a national transport concessions scheme to give Seniors Card holders concessions when they travel interstate.
Superannuation reforms that boost superannuation for hard working Australians, giving more financial security in retirement.
