The Utopia Community will receive funding of up to $338,243.00 (GST exc) for their Community Garden Project from the Gillard Labor Government.
The Utopia Community Garden preventative health project will improve health and nutrition of Utopia community by increasing access to affordable fruit and vegetables through the establishment of community gardens.
The funding will help establish gardens within the identified outstations of Camel Camp, Rocket Range and Atheyle.
It will also assist the community to prepare healthy meals using a community based approach such as a community kitchen model to conduct cooking classes and nutrition awareness.
The Utopia Community Garden project has been developed in response to the identified need for access to fresh and affordable fruit and vegetables.
Because many residences in the outstations of Camel Camp, Rocket Range and Atheyle do not have access to refrigerators, by the time residents are able to eat the store purchased food, it may already b deteriorating. That’s why community members have expressed a keen interest in starting their own gardens to have access to fresh fruit and vegetables.
The Utopia Community Garden project will help local families to improve their health by creating a local source of affordable fruit and vegetables and increasing knowledge of healthy eating. The local community will be involved and supported in designing, implementing and managing the community gardens on an ongoing basis.
This project will be run by The General Practice Network NT.
