The Federal Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, and the Northern Territory Minister for Central Australia, Karl Hampton and have welcomed a proposal to release 349 hectares of land for residential development in Alice Springs.
The approval of the Alice Springs Airport’s 2010 Master Plan includes a proposal to excise part of the airport site to enable future development.
“This proposal is a big step towards easing the pressure for residential land release in and around Alice Springs,” Mr Snowdon said.
“Once finalised, the development proposal for the area will provide an opportunity for hundreds, if not thousands of Territorians to get a new home.
"The approval of the Master Plan gives us in principal approval for the land transfer to the NT Government, and I will work to ensure the airport, the NT Government and the Commonwealth move forward with this important project.
"This is land is surplus and redundant to the long term development of the Alice Springs Airport and using it for housing is a great benefit to the community."
Mr Hampton said the proposal involved the NT Airports and Northern Territory Government working together on an integrated residential development of Kilgariff and the 349 hectares of land in the northern part of the Alice Springs airport site.
“This has the potential to be one of the most significant land releases for Alice Springs, allowing our town to continue to grow and prosper.
“There are obvious synergies between this land at the airport and the new residential suburb of Kilgariff, and together the developments have the potential to provide 4,500 dwellings over 20 years.
“Budget 2010 includes $10 million for headworks at the AZRI Kilgariff site, a considerable kickstart for this development.
“Secure land release is vital for the future development of Alice Springs and today’s announcement is fantastic news for our town,” Mr Hampton said.
An event to make this announcement will be held on the land being transferred near the Alice Springs Airport at 2pm. Please contact Alice Plate for more details.
