THE HON WARREN SNOWDON MP
Federal Member for Lingiari
13 December 2010
The Federal Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, has congratulated the YMCA in Katherine for being awarded an Australian Government grant of almost $93,000 for a much needed replacement vehicle.
Mr Snowdon met with YMCA representatives in Katherine today to discuss programs currently operated by the ‘Y’ and talk about the new funding provided to the organisation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that criminal proceeds are returned to the community through projects which make our communities safer, such as intervention programs for youth at risk.
“The YMCA in Katherine does a great job and I congratulate the organisation for the work it has done to secure a replacement vehicle for its Youth Diversion Program.
“Aboriginal youth involved in after school activities, alternative education programs, workshops and sport will benefit,” Mr Snowdon said.“The YMCA does an excellent job in providing young Australians with opportunities they would otherwise miss out on to improve life skills. It also encourages youth to stay in education and employment and to better engage with their community,” Mr Snowdon said.
The funding from the Proceeds of Crime Act (2002) enables money from assets of crime confiscated under Commonwealth law to be returned to the community.
So far this year, the Australian Government has provided more than $8.5 million to projects that assisted seniors with personal security, projects supporting victims of violent crime and projects working with young people at risk. The Y does a great job and I congratulate it on the work done to secure this valuable asset,” Mr Snowdon said.
