THE HON WARREN SNOWDON MP
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs
24 February 2011
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, today announced the re-appointment of the Director of the Australian War Memorial for an 18 month term.
Steve Gower AO AO (Mil), whose current appointment expires at the end of this month, will continue in the role.
“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring the Memorial continues as a world class place of remembrance and commemoration, and the Memorial had been extensively improved and expanded over the period of Mr Gower’s leadership.
“During his tenure as Director, we have seen the construction and development of Anzac Hall, the CEW Bean Building and the post-1945 galleries and more recently the Hall of Valour. An education program for more than 120,000 Australian school children has been established.
“The Memorial has also been inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame in recognition of its status as a world renowned facility. It is a show piece for national and international visitors of which Australians can be proud,” Mr Snowdon said.
Mr Snowdon said as one of our most prominent national institutions, continued strong leadership of the Memorial is vital to its future.
“It’s important to make sure we have sufficient time to identify the best candidate with the unique set of skills required, and I’ve asked the Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to start a recruitment process later in the year.”
Mr Snowdon said the Memorial is facing a significant period in Australia’s military history as it gears up for the centenary of Anzac in 2015.
