The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon said the 2011-2012 Budget delivered more that $59.4 million to expand Defence capability within the Northern Territory.
“The Gillard Government is committed to the men and women of the Australian Defence Force in the Territory who work hard in the national interest of Australia. These enhancements provide them with the facilities that let them better do their job.”
Mr Snowdon said this year’s budget includes $4.2 million dollars to construct a Medical Facility at Mount Bundey Training area.
“It will include two resuscitation beds, five low dependency beds, two consultation rooms and domestic support facilities and will primarily be used during the dry season training period.
“This facility will provide better medical care for soldiers using the Mt Bundey Training Area and in particular 1 Brigade personnel based at Robertson Barracks.”
Other new upgrades and enhancements for facilities of the Navy, Army and Air Force include;
$1.7m for permanent facilities for the Heavy Airlift Capability
Fuel reconfiguration and integration works will be completed in 2012 to provide permanent facilities and airfield pavements at RAAF Darwin to support the operations of the C-17 Globemaster heavy lift aircraft.
$370,000 to support upgrade of countermine capability facilities
$200,000 to assist in the upgrade of the Darwin Naval Fuel Installation to provide a safe working environment and to minimise the risk of fuel spills and environmental contamination
Senator for the Northern Territory, Trish Crossin, said this budget illustrates Labor has delivered for Defence in the Northern Territory.
“With almost 800 Navy, 4,100 Army, and over 1,250 Air Force personnel and almost 400 Defence public servants, the contribution of Defence to the Territory can not be underestimated.”
In addition, the 2011-12 Budget funds ongoing upgrades and enhancements including:
$36.3m as part of the $72.1m Robertson Barracks Redevelopment;
$16.4m as part of the $49.8m RAAF Darwin Redevelopment Stage 2 project;
$249,000 as part of a $2.2m upgrade of 1st Aviation Regiment Facilitiesat Robertson Barracks; The 1 Aviation Regiment will have its facilities upgraded to allow the full operation of the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters to occur. Construction commenced early 2011 and will be completed in August 2011, and will provide heliwash, repair facilities and other associated works
Defence contributes more $800 million a year to the Gross State Product in the Northern Territory, and stimulates an additional 4,500 non-Defence jobs in local business.
