Eighteen Indigenous trainees from the Northern Territory were newly inducted into NORFORCE today, with a March-Out Parade at the Larrakeyah Barracks in Darwin acknowledging their completion of a first step of training.
The participants are part of a seven month Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) based out of Katherine which provides young Indigenous people from a number of remote and regional communities with education, training, life skills and confidence to gain skills foremployment opportunities.
Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon, and Senator for Northern Territory, Trish Crossin, congratulated the trainees for reaching this milestone in their training.
There are 18 participants who come from Katherine, Darwin, Lajamanu, Amoonguna, Alice Springs, Ramingining, Minjilang, Pine Creek, Galiwinku, Santa Teresa and Tiwi Islands and are aged between 17 and 28 years.
Senator Crossin attended the March-Out Parade presenting the graduates with certificates, while NORFORCE Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Goldston presented them with NORFORCE Unit Insignia.
Senator Crossin said the group will spend the next six months working towards obtaining a Certificate II in Rural Operations, blended with construction and horticulture competencies that link to local employment opportunities; before graduating from the DIDP in November 2011.
“I congratulate these young men and women for taking on a worthy challenge and wish them well in their studies over the next six months,’ said Senator Crossin.
The DIDP is a joint initiative of the Department of Defence, Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Education and Training.
