The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel and Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, has offered his sincere condolences to the family and friends of Royal Australian Air Force Sergeant Michael Dunn from Katherine.
Sergeant Dunn died on Tuesday 20th September 2011 after injuries were sustained during an explosion at Rockhampton Airport in July, as part of Exercise Talisman Sabre.
Mr Snowdon said he was a respected and much liked member of the RAAF, who proudly served for 27 years.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, comrades and mates of Sergeant Dunn.
I know the people who knew and loved him will be supporting each other through this sad and difficult time,” Mr Snowdon said.
“The death of Sergeant Dunn will be felt at RAAF Base Tindal where he was based, and across the Katherine community.”
Sergeant Dunn was a member of 322 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron (322ECSS), and part of the arrester team, his duties include operating the arresting cable across a runway in the event of an emergency landing by a fast jet such as a F/A-18 Hornet.
Sergeant Dunn was awarded the Australian Defence Medal and the Defence Long Service Medal with two Clasps.
“A service record stretching for almost three decades within the Australian Defence Force is an impressive thing and there can be no doubt the Air Force is feeling the loss of such a dedicated member,” he said.
The Royal Australian Air Force and the Defence Community Organisation is providing support to the Dunn family.
“The family of Sergeant Dunn has requested privacy during this time and I ask the media to respect their wishes,” Mr Snowdon said.
