Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous Affairs and Federal labor spokesperson for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander said the failure of the NT Government to invite either himself or Senator Peris to the National Aboriginal Health Summit commencing tomorrow in Darwin tomorrow was another demonstration of the petty political partisanship of the CLP.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health should require that we all work together in as bipartisan a way as possible if we are to achieve the national objective of closing the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes. ” Mr Snowdon said.
Its concerning that the Northern Territory Government has not bothered to include the NT Federal Labor representatives in these important health discussions around Closing the Gap.”
“As a former Minister for Indigenous Health I was responsible for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health plan a plan which has been adopted by the Federal Government, I have a long-running and demonstrated commitment to Closing the Gap and it’s petty of the Giles CLP Government to refuse to allow Senator Peris and I to participate.
“As the federal spokesperson for Indigenous health I am conscience of the need to work cooperatively, I have been in regular dialogue with the Federal Minister for Health Fiona Nash to ensure that we continue a bi-partisan approach to closing the gap.
“This conference is very important for and despite what the CLP might think its possible that the next federal government will be a Labor Government. The decision by the CLP Government to exclude both Senator Peris and myself, is as short-sighted as it is stupid and petty.”
“Despite what they might think we want to work cooperatively with the Northern Territory Government as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people here in the NT and elsewhere to address the many challenges that they face on the health front.”
“We will only ever close the gap by working together.” Mr Snowdon said.
