The Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon today condemned Malcolm Turnbull for buckling to pressure from the hard right of his party and yesterday supporting changes to Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (the RDA).
“What is it that the Prime Minister wants people to be able to say that they can’t say now? Mr Turnbull is seeking to weaken a law which is designed to protect all Australians from being subject to cowardly hate speech by the strong and the privileged,” Mr Snowdon said.
“Aboriginal people in particular are rightly concerned about these proposed changes because of the hatred, abuse and vilification that so many have in the past been subject to,” Mr Snowdon said.
According to the last census 42% of people living in Lingiari are Aboriginal and around 40% of the population have at least one overseas born parent.
“Lingiari is an increasingly diverse multicultural community, and we should be rejoicing in that diversity not providing the opportunity for bigots to find protection in the changes proposed to the RDA,” Mr Snowdon said.
Territorians should never accept racial vilification and bigotry behaviour. All forms of casual racism and hate speech must be condemned.
“How can the Turnbull Government believe that it is okay to offend, insult or humiliate any person based on their race? My Labor colleagues and I will fight every step of the way in opposing all forms of hate speech,” Mr Snowdon said.
Once again, Malcolm Turnbull has shown just how out of touch he is, what a poor Prime Minister he is and how he is now a puppet of One Nation and the extreme right of his own party leaving vulnerable Australians without adequate protection.
