The Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon MP, welcomes the partnership between the Territory Labor Government and the Vocus Group that will provide Tiwi Islanders with reliable, future-proofed and weather-resistant telecommunications infrastructure for the first time.
The project will invest $8.5 million to establish a 46km undersea optic fibre cable to the Islands to provide better mobile phone and broadband services and will open up new economic opportunities for local businesses. The new link will also provide Tiwi people with better access to very important tele and digital health services and give people an opportunity to improve their digital literacy and skills.
With Telecommunication services to the Tiwi Islands currently at capacity the new investment will ensure there is capability to meet the demands of future growth and to give the same standard of communication services that other NT urban centres take for granted.
Importantly services to the Islands that are periodically cut due to weather events or equipment failure, leading to no telecommunications for days, will now be guaranteed.
Mr Snowdon said, “It is just as vital for remote communities to have access to reliable telecommunications as it is anywhere in Australia and is essential for participating in the modern world to give improved outcomes in; health, education, economic development, creating local jobs and connecting with family and friends.”
