FEDERAL LABOR TO FUND $11M FOR KATHERINE FLOOD MITIGATION AND HEADWORKS
Federal Labor will contribute $11 million to Stage 2 of the Katherine Flood Mitigation Plan.
This $11 million investment will come from the Regional Growth Fund and is used for major transformational projects which support long-term economic growth and create jobs.
In partnership with the Northern Territory Government’s existing $11 million, Stage 2 will see the creation of important flood mitigation levies and a much needed Katherine East Neighbourhood centre for the community.
Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Stephen Jones said, “This is a significant investment in Katherine and a win for the community and town both in terms of a solid economic investment and better future proofing the town of Katherine in times of flooding.”
Shadow Assistant Minister for Northern Australia, The Hon Warren Snowdon said, “Our last major flood was in 2006 and the impacts were devastating, leaving Katherine cut off and with a clean-up costing millions of dollars. Federal Labor is committed to working with the Northern Territory Government and Katherine Town Council to ensuring that devastation doesn’t happen again.”
Northern Territory Labor Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler said, “We welcome this investment from Federal Labor as flooding in the Territory can create many issues – from community safety, to transport of goods and disruptions of services – so it’s important to ensure our major towns and cities have strong mitigation strategies in place.”
“This joint venture will support around 170 local jobs – which is great news for Territorians.”
The local member for Katherine, Sandra Nelson said, “Investing in Katherine’s Flood Mitigation initiatives brings a range of positive outcomes to Katherine including economic opportunities and supports; Business, tourism, pastoral and most importantly community resilience.”
The Katherine Flood Mitigation Plan was made from recommendations by the Katherine Flood Mitigation Advisory Committee in order to mitigate the impact of flooding in the Katherine Region.
A number of recommendations have already been completed by the Northern Territory Government.
