Labor welcomes the appointment of Tiwi woman Marion Scrymgour as CEO of the Northern Land Council.
This is a historic appointment, with Ms Scrymgour being the first woman to hold the position of CEO at any Northern Territory land council. She has been a trailblazer throughout her distinguished career – as the first Aboriginal woman to be elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and the highest-ranked First Nations woman in government in Australia’s history. Prior to her parliamentary career, Ms Scrymgour served with distinction as the CEO of the Wurli-Wulinjang Aboriginal Health Service and as the inaugural CEO of the Katherine West Aboriginal Health Board. She has been a fierce advocate for the rights and interests of First Nations peoples and is well placed to deliver necessary reform.
Marion has a proven ability to bring people together and to focus on the necessary objectives for the people these services were designed to deliver for.
The Northern Land Council is one of the most important bodies for First Nations peoples in the Northern Territory. As CEO, Ms Scrymgour assumes the important responsibility of leading the NLC as it continues to support First Nations peoples in the Top End to regain and manage their traditional lands and seas.
Labor looks forward to working closely with Ms Scrymgour and the NLC to ensure they achieve the best outcomes for First Nations peoples in the Northern Territory.
