Media releases Wednesday, 10 June 2009 Innovation fund delivers a 'meeting place' for Alice Springs Senator Mark Arbib and the Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, today announced an Innovation Fund project that will help Indigenous job seekers in Alice Springs to develop their own business. The Rudd Government is providing $650,000 towards an interactive tourist centre called ‘The Meeting Place’ which will create a space for artists, story tellers, a retail shop and a bush tucker garden. The project will offer training and employment opportunities in the areas of hospitality, cooking and business development for up to 180 job seekers as well as providing personal development courses including health and nutrition, budgeting, communication, literacy/numeracy and work readiness training. The Innovation Fund provides $41 million over the next three years for innovative community projects that connect local disadvantaged job seekers to training and employment. Under the Fund assistance will be provided to up to 9000 disadvantaged job seekers with job and training opportunities provided to more than 3000 participants. The projects will ensure that during these tough economic times of global recession, disadvantaged job seekers won’t be left behind and will gain skills they need to find new work and be ready for the jobs of tomorrow. Nationwide, Round One of the Innovation Fund has seen the Rudd Government commit $20 million to 33 projects that boost literacy, numeracy and language skills, work experience placements and training opportunities. The Round One projects, such as ‘The Meeting Place’, will commence on 1 July 2009 and is part of the Government’s new employment services system, Job Services Australia, which comes into effect on the same day. The new $4.9 billion Job Services Australia folds seven programs into a one-stop-shop that provides out of work Australians with more tailored assistance. It includes more resources for disadvantaged job seekers to help them address employment and personal barriers to employment.
