Media releases Tuesday, 30 June 2009 $17.5 million for modernising schools in Lingiari Schools from Galiwinku to Alice Springs will soon have new or refurbished science laboratories or language centres thanks to the first stage of the Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools (SLC) element of the Building the Education Revolution (BER). Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP said nine secondary schools in Lingiari would share in over $17.5 million in what is an historic modernisation of our outback schools. “The students at Gapuwiyak School, Katherine High, Milingimbi CEC, Shepherdson College at Galiwinku, Tennant Creek High and more, will all benefit from the Government’s huge investment in much needed new school buildings. “This important element of Building the Education Revolution is delivering vital funding to secondary schools that have demonstrated their school’s disadvantage and need through a competitive process. “This means, following today’s announcement, that schools such as OLSH at Wadeye will now get a science centre, and that Maningrida CEC will enjoy the benefits of a language centre,” Mr Snowdon said. Projects under SLC will provide schools with access to modern facilities with leading edge technologies in their own learning spaces. Construction of these projects will commence quickly, providing immediate support for jobs. The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) is working with education authorities in relation to a number of other applications from schools which are yet to finalise the costings for their projects. A further announcement will be made when this process has been completed. Meanwhile, applications for Round Three of Primary Schools for the 21st Century close on 10 July 2009, and will see all remaining eligible Australian schools receive funding. Building the Education Revolution is a key element of the Rudd Government’s $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long-term.
