Phosphate mine celebrates dedicated workforce

Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon has congratulated 60 staff from Christmas Island’s phosphate mine, who were each recognised for more than 15 years of service, at a function over the weekend.

More than 200 people attended the celebrations held at Christmas Island District High School on Saturday night, where Phosphate Resources’ workers received a gift and certificate for their dedication.

Mr Snowdon said he’s been conducting visits to the island, which forms part of his electorate, since 1987.

“In that time, I’ve seen just how crucial the mine and its workforce is to the Christmas Island community.

“Many workers were born here and many have brought their kids up here.

“These employees enrich the community because many of them have Chinese or Malay backgrounds, adding a unique multi-cultural flavour to life here,” Mr Snowdon said.

He said the long service period illustrates a loyalty to employers which is rare in modern day times.

“It’s quite an achievement, especially considering recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows 22 per cent of employees spend less than 12 months working for the same employer.”

Nine of the workers awarded were part of the ‘original’ staff present the mine re-opened in 1990.

“Well done to Ang Ah Sai, Haw Sing Kong, Teng Gaik Ngah, Saw Seng Keat, Chew Sian Hin, Fong See Wah, Ooi Ah Bah, Koh Jee Fook, and Mahmood Ismail,” Mr Snowdon said.
